Although the treatment of women is horrible in this novel; the consequences came full circle at the end. Therefore, I really loved this gothic novel. There’s something so interesting and somber about gothic fiction; it’s the anticipation, the secret passages, and the shady characters. Overall, it was an enjoyable read with interesting sub-plots following the misfortunes of different characters besides The Monk.
