“The Catcher in the Rye” is basically a one man show – the downfall of Holden Caulfield and what could be said as a hopeful climb at the end. The most surprising and enticing element of the story is writing style, specifically voice. Holden has such a strong voice with recurrent thoughts, emotions, and expressions that makes him distinct and make it feel like he is talking directly at you retelling a few days and the many encounters he’s had that shaped him. It feels like a peek into someones journal and therefore their raw emotions. The book also had many messages but they’re not in your face to adopt but just to mull over – the importance of modesty, academia, family, and health coping mechanism towards loss and trauma. Overall, this book is a classic for a reason and I encourage everyone to pick it up even if it turns out not to be their cup of tea!
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
