The “Watchmen” graphic novel follows a group of superheroes that are incredibly flawed. They are stalked by an assassin that they must reveal its identity. Consequently, the concept of superheroes gets explored through morality and the human condition.
This is definitely, in my opinion, one of the greatest graphic novels out there.
The art style is incredibly detailed and well depicting of movement, feelings, and narratives. The different styles of narratives were brilliant. Rorschach’s diary, Jon’s thoughts, Hollis’s biography, journal clippings, the young man reading the Captain Freighter comic story, etc. everything was simply well orchestrated. I didn’t see the plot twist coming at the end, the great reveal of the mastermind behind the entire intrigue.
The characters have so much depth. I loved Rorschach because despite being supposed to hate him. Despite him being the real evil of the graphic… Laurie, Dan, Hollis, Sally, Jon, Janey, and Moloch were all very complex and morally grey characters. Although Adrian Veidt is portrayed as the hero at the end of the story, I was incredibly unsettled and in all honesty despised the anti-climatic ending. I strongly believe another chapter would have been necessary and appreciated in this case.
Regardless of the ambiguous ending, this graphic novel deserves all the merit it has obtained in the last decades.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
