“Norwegian Wood” follows college student Toru in Tokyo. He is devoted to a beautiful young woman Naoko. They grieve their best friend who’s passed away. Adapting to campus life, Toru feels his isolation palpably as Naoko retreats further into herself.
It was impossible for me to separate myself from this book. I couldn’t stop reading it.
It was hard going into this book at first knowing that it would deal with coming-of-age topics, depression, and suicide.
The book was everywhere from heartwarming to dark and gritty to funny and musical.
I absolutely devoured it and need more Murakami in my life.
Overall, a great and important read offering exposure to Japanese culture.

“They get better.”
