What I liked:
– I liked that Tahereh used names like Shirini for a place and Sabzi and a owner, which respectively means sweet and green herbs in the Persian language. I loved that she incorporated her own culture into this middle grade book.
– I enjoyed the complex family dynamics, especially between Alice and her mother.
– Alice’s willfulness, which is quite refreshing. – I also liked Alice’s friendship with Oliver.
– Interesting writing style and narration. I liked the distanced narrator that directly spoke to us (dear readers)… it wasn’t too tedious nor was it forgotten throughout the story.
What I didn’t like:
– It was hard to imagine or picture things that were happening at times or descriptions of things. (I’m not too sure if that was the point or not?)
– The ending felt a bit flat, a bit anti-climatic although there was a resolution.
Overall, it was still a great retelling and it had its own twists and turns.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
