I loved this book. I didn’t like the ending much but was quite expecting it. I love everything from the anecdotes to the intertextual references to other books. Some passages made me laugh and even tear up. I’ve felt super nostalgic for my own French Canadian province, having also emigrated in Canada. It’s just such a great and retrospective book. The writing style is soothing and very simple and comprehensible which made the story flow super quickly. This book also made me super excited to read Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road,” which was a great influence to this novel’s main character.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
