Set in Nigeria, this young adult book did not shy away / abstain from showing different cultural norms; parents flogging their children, adults telling children to shut up and punishing them (physically) when they commit a crime. I think the crude tone truly added to the story.
Sunny, the main character, has to accept the multiplicity of her identity: Albino, American, Nigerian Igbo, and Leopard. I love how she challenges gender norms and asserting that women can in fact play soccer and be strong and capable of doing “gendered” task.
Besides the violence and stereotypes, there was a good portrayal of friendship and the power of learning and accepting one’s self. I loved the creative use of magic and language in this book as well, definitely an engrossing book and I’m looking forward to reading the second book.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
