This one is focused on Ernaux’ mother during the last few months of her life. It is raw, horrific, realistic, and self-reflexive in its journalistic writing depicting her mother’s Alzheimer. Much harder to read than “Une femme” but the intertextual dialogue between the two demands to be explored and read together.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
