This is severely overhyped. It has its moments but I would not recommend it. There are way better road novels than this one (“Into the Wild” and “Volkswagen Blues” being my favorites). I did admire the narrator’s (Sal Paradise) constant reconciliation with the madness that is Dean Moriarty (whom apparently is a pseudonym for Kerouac’s real life friend).
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
