“Daisy Jones & The Six” is a book about a fictional iconic 1970s rock group. This book explores the band’s process to fame as well as their break-up. The book also explores the L.A. lifestyle of the 70’s highlighting topics of sex, drugs, alcohol, and rock & roll.
This book is a deep character study of the band members of this fictional group through interviews, focusing especially on Billy and Daisy the main singers, and the strains and successes they add to the band.
I really really enjoyed the female characters of this book – they were all badass feminists in their own ways! I love how this book explored the differences of men and women in the rock&roll scene of the 70s.
I also liked the realistic depiction of addiction in its many forms. It wasn’t gratuitous or dealt with lightly and I really appreciated that.
Through the interview style of the narrative, we get to experience the intricacies of the character’s personal & professional relationship as well as seeing the story unfold and retold through different lenses. We see the competing voices in the industry. We also see the difficulty of holding on to one’s own creativity – while still being able to adapt and change for the benefit of the art – all while still staying true to yourself and your art.
The only part that hit me hard was the twist towards the end!
Camila – the only character not on the title – is the true hero/backbone of this book!
“I had absolutely no interest in being somebody else’s muse.
I am not a muse.
I am the somebody.
End of fucking story.”
“Men often think they deserve a sticker for treating women like people.”
