What a ride. Anne is possibly one of the most beloved and eccentric characters I’ve ever read. This was engrossing and beautiful in its depiction of the natural world and rural life of Canada in the early 20th century. All of Anne’s ordeals – from her mishaps to her confessions – and her entire growth from child to adult was beautiful to experience, to laugh at, and to cry at and sympathize with. I can definitely relate to her wistful nature, imagination, and her desires to be loved, accepted, and even respected, her drive towards her education, and so on. As she has to everyone in Avonlea; she has grown on me and inspired me with her rambling speeches and quirks.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
