The pacing of this book is unlike any other Cassandra Clare book – I can’t necessarily pinpoint the reasons besides saying that I absolutely loved and adored this book! She really brought these characters to life! The story mainly follow Lucy, James, and Cordelia and sometimes Matthew and Thomas; I wish we got to see more of Alastair, Christopher, and Anna. I liked how the “Ghosts of the Shadow Market” which gives the background stories of these other characters. Other readers ‘newcomers’ to the series might struggle understanding certain motives and character traits. It is always a pleasure seeing Jem, Will, Tessa, and Magnus Bane, even the ghost of Jessamine. I need to gush about this next point: PERSIAN CHARACTERS. PERSIAN REPRESENTATION. Cordelia is half-Persian! Thank you so much Cassie Clare, I am finally seen. And how relatable the discussions around being Persian and mixed race! I love how it played respectfully on the tradtiiaonl tropes of Persian families: hospitality of offering tea, good food, overprotective yet loving parents and siblings, the terms of endearment, and the references to old poetry and sayings. I LOVED the constant weaving of the “Layla and Majnun” love story shared and translated from Cordelia to James. I hope this continues because I have never thought of myself being represented in my favourite fantasy series – my heart is full. The ending of this book was devastating and I am so glad I read it the week before the second instalment of “The Last Hours” series!
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
