Baudelaire having translated Edgar Allan Poe has that eerie type of atmosphere underlining most of his poems. His fascination with the passing of time, the disintegration of morals through consumption/indulgence, the city of Paris and its classes of people, art, sanctifying and condemning women, etc, they all allow for interesting exploration of the poets hardship. There is a lot to unpack here and every poem requires supplementary scrutiny but it doesn’t hinder Baudelaire lyricist genius and his readers’ enjoyment.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
