In this book, compared to Kleon’s two previous book on art and craft, gets REAL. I think he uncovered a lot of the ‘creative’ (artist, writer, etc.) myth in this one. A few of my favourite lessons summed up:
– Art consists of daily effort in which the end is never truly an end. Creators are always onto the next thing when one project is done.
– Routine is key to understanding what we spend and don’t spend our time on. By establishing and sticking to our own daily rituals; we create room and importance to the making of art.
– Therefore, the importance of having a designated time and space where we can go and hide from the world as well as disconnect from social media, in order to reconnect with ourselves and our art.
– Art is likened to making gifts – to our loved ones, to the world, to ourselves. Art is not first and foremost a monetization technique and/or a means to gain massive exposure and praise. – And thus, art is in fact a way of making the world a better place, a world worth living in.
– Art is much like child’s play, and, child play is meticulous and orderly even in its pleasurable fun.
– Art is also about making the ordinary life, extraordinary. In which we focus on a minor overlooked detail of every day life and make art of it.
– Art is about what you pay attention to.
– Art is also about your ability to change your mind, to rediscover, to learn, to grow, and to hope.
– Art productivity is not the same as art creativity. Procrastinating and tidying up can spark a new light on our art creativity.
– Art nourishes on the good habits in our lives; on sleeping and walking. Essentially, refocusing and refreshing our brains and taking care of our mental/physical health.
– Art takes time; it is a garden of growth meant to flourish. Every thing passes in the matter of “this too shall pass” but art is everlasting. The closest we come to making a mark.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
