This was so painful to read. I really think I skim read the third part because I could not be bothered. All the descriptions. All the negativity. I never ever want to touch or think about this book ever again. It’s like a bad version of “Anna Karenina.” I read this in French and despised the prose, the characters, the story, and especially the pacing. I can’t believe how big this classic is in literature and how much its discussed. Okay, Madame Bovary suffers from romanticism, we get it. I am so over it.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
