I read this in one sitting. I was instantly captivated from the first page. And the first few pages got me crying real tears and laughing out loud. THAT’S INSANE. And this continued all the way through. There was even a moment I was crying and laughing at the same time. This book. This book deserves all the praise. This should be continuously taught in schools. Alexie depicts the life of an indigenous teen but more than that. Issues of race, identity, friendship, family, community, drinking, eating disorder, depression, school, education, poverty, hormones, everything literally everything is in here. This is a well rounded book. Comedic but sad. Realistic but creative. The drawings throughout simply added to character’s voice and emotions since drawing is Junior’s method of self-expression. This book did also not shy away from all that’s ugly while presenting a hopeful light and message throughout. A book I will continuously find myself thinking of years to come. I already want to reread, knowing full well I’ll get something out of it every time…
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
