A work of brilliance. I could not put this down. This book was so refreshing. The characters, the various themes, the representation, all of it. This is what I call a rounded fiction. It has a little bit of everything for everyone even if you are not a black lesbian woman living in America. It is regardlessly relatable, all the emotions are tangible and truly heart-felt. As for the writing style, it took me only the first few letters to get used to it. Celie’s – the main character – voice is distinguishably her own and it comes as a stark contrast when letters from her educated sister – Nettie – comes back to her and make an entrance to the novel. The author is definitely a master of writing and writing styles. I loved it. I never knew I’d love an epistolary novel this much. I already want to reread it. I already miss it. And I highly recommend it.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
