This definitely lived up to the hype. Acevedo is a talented writer – she knows how to pack a punch. I’ve always found long narration through poetry (verse) a hard feat to achieve and yet the author, or should I say the poetess, makes it seem so effortless. One poem bleeding into the next to tell the story of Xiomara who is finding her voice and her place in a world that likes to judge and box girls into categories.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
