“There’s Someone Inside Your House” is a young adult thriller reminiscent of I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Scream franchise (teenagers are being targeted and murdered – but this time for their past sins.)

“There’s Someone Inside Your House” follows Makani Young, a biracial high school student running away from her dark past in Hawaii to a small town in Nebraska. But can one truly run away from their past? Despite making new friends and a budding romance, Makani has to face her past as not only her life depends on it but those of her friends with a killer running loose and targeting students of her school Osborne Hugh.
There is something to be said when horror greatly parallels the horrors of being a teenager – the guilt of transgressions, the loss of friendship, the terror of new love, and the pain of trusting people again. What I truly enjoyed the most about this book is that it wasn’t a gratuitous slasher. But don’t get me wrong, this book was pretty bloody and gruesome for YA!
The main character Makani Young is a fully formed person dealing with shame and redemption as her past life collides with her new reality.
I also liked that Perkins gave her a full personality and did not solely emphasize Makani’s biracial background (she’s Hawaiian and African-American.) As a biracial person, I always appreciate seeing representation without it being fetishized.
Great news for movie lovers, there’s a successful Netflix adaption by the same name.
Also, I read this book as part of a Spooky Reading Vlog. You can watch it here.
