“Wuthering Heights” is a big love story turned revenge plot. The story follows the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange – Mr. Lockwood – as he uncovers the love story of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. And, consequently, the long complicated history between the residents of the Grange and of Wuthering Heights.
In the first 100 pages, I was truly thrilled to continue with this story and see how all of the characters would get on (more like how they will not get on.)
To start with a few things that I enjoyed… I liked that the story is told by someone who’s not quote on quote the main character. Although the story is told by the maid Nelly Dean, the reader and interlocutor Mr. Lockwood can understand and agree on her point of view of the entire matter. In doing so, it makes her the only relatable character to the reader.
As for the other characters, I’ve stopped caring for them after a while. I am not one to judge or even dislike flawed characters but gosh these characters were insufferable.
As for the writing style, it was very beautiful at times especially when talking about the atmosphere of Wuthering Heights.
Overall, I do recommend this book and I can understand why it’s a classic. However, it isn’t my favourite classic.
“He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.”
