If you’re a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I do believe you will enjoy this 8th and final book! Although it is written as a play, it still remains enjoyable and easy to read!
Now let’s jump into my book review of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (Harry Potter #8) by J.K. Rowling.
- Date finished: August 1st, 2016
- Pages: 330
- Format: Hardcover
- Form: Play
- Language read in: English
- Series: Harry Potter #8
- Genre: Fantasy | Magic | Children’s Fiction
This book follows the children of the main characters (Harry as well as Ron & Hermione) years after the ending of the original Harry Potter series. Harry Potter himself is a father of 3 children and is an overworked employee at the Ministry of Magic.
The story follows young Albus, Harry’s son, who struggles to live up to his father’s legacy. Slowly the past and future start to coincide and reconnects father and son in the darkest of places.
I had to pace myself. I had to really pace myself while reading this. Not only for my emotions but also because I wanted this book to last.
Nevertheless, I actually liked the plot (surprisingly enough). I would’ve loved it if it was an actual book and not a play. But I’m still happy that we got this story. Although I simply wanted moreee.
{SPOILER WARNING AHEAD}
Rambling thoughts ahead:
- Albus – Harry’s son – was an annoying character but I acknowledge that it adds to the plot and to Harry’s struggle as a parent.
- I love Scorpius so so much. He was such a great new character.
- DRACO’S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND THE TRAGEDY OF HIS WIFE ABSOLUTELY TEAR MY HEART OUT. Draco is truly one of the most interesting characters.
- Hermione is in the Ministery of Magic, which is very rewarding as she is a smart and talented half-witch.
- I always loved the concept of time turners so I’m not even complaining about it being the main plot point (even though it frustrated a lot of readers).
- I know that this book is a play and all BUT I wished we had more involvement with Hermione & Ron’s children. ALSO, where the hell were James and Lily Potter juniors when all of the events went down???
- Furthenore, it was so interesting and terrifying to see the alternate world in which Voldemort won the battle… with Snape harboring Ron and Hermione.
- Dumbledore’s apparition and his advice on “love being blind” really made me emotional.
- I cried when Harry Potter – alongside his family and friends – helplessly witnessed his parents death and Hagrid’s rescue.
In summary, I give “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” 6 stars because it’s more Harry Potter content. I simply can not hate it. I only have love for the Harry Potter series even if this installment was in the form of a play.
“Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”
“In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again. Be honest to those you love, show your pain. To suffer is as human as to breathe.”
